As a parent, there's nothing more important than securing your child's future—what if their athletic talent could help you do just that? When passion meets opportunity, doors open—could your child's athletic skills be the key to unlocking a debt-free college education?
I grew up in Lincoln Park, Michigan, where I attended Lincoln Park High School and developed a deep love for basketball. I had big dreams of playing college basketball, but like many families, mine faced significant financial challenges.
My mother, who worked tirelessly to support me, simply couldn’t afford the high cost of college tuition. Despite my talent, I lacked the guidance and resources needed to navigate the complex world of sports recruiting.
I was offered a chance to play basketball at Henry Ford College, a junior college (JUCO), but without any scholarship guidance, I ended up dropping out after my first semester. Without a stable income or support system, I found myself homeless, a situation that led me to make the tough decision to join the military.
During my military service, I continued to pursue my passion for basketball, playing semi-professionally for the Marine Corps basketball team. However, my military career took a serious turn when I was deployed to serve in two combat tours. The experiences I faced during these tours left me with combat-related PTSD, a challenge that would shape my future in unexpected ways.
After leaving the military, I returned to my hometown, determined to make a difference. I began coaching basketball in the very community where I grew up—a community where the median household income is around $60,000.
I knew firsthand the financial challenges many families faced and wanted to help high school athletes and their parents use their athletic talents to cover the cost of college tuition.
With the help of the GI Bill, I attended Eastern Michigan University. Without that financial aid, I would have found myself in the same situation I was in before joining the military—struggling to afford college.
My passion for learning and self-improvement didn’t stop there. I later earned a Master’s degree from Michigan State University, further equipping myself with the knowledge and skills needed to make a lasting impact in my community.
It was during this time that I started coaching the sport I loved and realized I could make a significant impact by guiding young athletes and their families through the recruiting process. It was a no-brainer.
I began assisting families for free, helping them navigate the complex world of sports recruiting. However, as word spread and more families sought my help, I realized I couldn’t continue to do this work without some form of compensation. I understood what my mother had gone through, and I was determined to ensure that no other family had to face the same hardships.
In 2016, I officially launched TruChampions as a national recruiting service. As my reputation grew, I began to connect with well-known athletes, college coaches, and professionals. One of the most significant connections I made was with Jimmy King, a member of the legendary Michigan Fab 5. Jimmy was one of the top 25 high school basketball players in the country before he went on to play for the University of Michigan and later in the pros. He shared my passion for helping young athletes and provided invaluable insights and secrets that have helped us successfully recruit athletes over others.
I also partnered with Melissa Sampey, a passionate mother and fellow Eastern Michigan graduate, who shared my vision. Together, we’ve continued to build TruChampions into a service that not only helps young athletes reach their dreams but also ensures that their families don’t have to endure the financial struggles that mine did.
As I dove deeper into the world of high school sports and began coaching in my hometown, I started to see a troubling pattern. I noticed that countless talented young athletes were falling through the cracks in the recruiting process, unable to secure the scholarships and opportunities they deserved. It wasn’t because they lacked skill or potential; it was because the existing system was flawed in several critical ways.
Many athletes, particularly those from lower-income families, didn’t have access to the resources or guidance needed to navigate the complex world of college recruiting. They weren’t sure how to get noticed by college coaches, how to build a compelling athletic profile, or even what steps to take to market themselves effectively. Without this knowledge, they were at a significant disadvantage compared to athletes who had more support and connections.
The recruiting process heavily favored athletes who had connections, either through well-connected coaches, sports programs with strong ties to colleges, or families who could afford recruiting services. This left many deserving athletes—often from underrepresented or economically disadvantaged backgrounds—without the same opportunities to showcase their talents. The lack of equitable access meant that a great deal of potential was going unnoticed, simply because these athletes weren’t on the radar of college scouts.
For many families, the high cost of college was a significant concern. They saw their child’s athletic talent as a potential way to offset these costs through scholarships, but without proper guidance, they struggled to turn this potential into reality. The recruiting services that were available often came with hefty fees, making them inaccessible to families who needed them the most. This created a vicious cycle where those who could benefit most from athletic scholarships were the least likely to secure them.
Seeing these gaps and inequities in the system, I realized that something needed to change. The current model wasn’t serving all athletes equally, and it was leaving too many talented individuals without the opportunities they deserved. I knew there had to be a way to level the playing field, to provide every athlete with the guidance, resources, and exposure they needed to succeed, regardless of their background or financial situation.
This realization was the driving force behind the creation of TruChampions—a service designed to fill these gaps and ensure that no athlete is left behind. The idea for TruChampions didn’t come to me all at once; it was the result of years of personal experience, reflection, and a deep desire to make a difference. The initial spark came from my own struggles and the challenges I saw other young athletes and their families facing. I knew there had to be a better way to navigate the complex world of sports recruiting, especially for those who didn’t have the financial means or the necessary guidance.
The seed for TruChampions was planted during my time coaching in my hometown. As I worked with young athletes, I noticed a recurring pattern: many talented kids were missing out on scholarship opportunities simply because they lacked the right connections or didn’t know how to market themselves to college coaches. At the same time, I was keenly aware of the financial burden that college tuition placed on their families. This realization led to the idea that there needed to be a service dedicated to bridging this gap—a service that could provide both athletes and their families with the tools and support they needed to secure scholarships and make college more affordable.
Turning this idea into a concrete concept required me to dig deeper into the specifics of the problem. I began by researching the existing sports recruiting landscape, identifying its strengths and weaknesses. I talked to athletes, parents, coaches, and educators to understand their experiences and what they felt was missing in the current system. This research confirmed what I had already suspected: there was a significant gap between talented athletes and the opportunities available to them, largely due to a lack of guidance and resources.
With this understanding, I started to outline what TruChampions would look like in practice. I envisioned a service that not only connected athletes with college coaches but also provided comprehensive support throughout the entire recruiting process. This would include personalized guidance on how to build an athlete’s profile, how to effectively communicate with coaches, and how to maximize scholarship opportunities. I also knew that this service needed to be accessible to families from all financial backgrounds.
With a clearer vision in mind, I started putting the pieces together. I developed a business plan that detailed the core services TruChampions would offer, how these services would be delivered, and the impact I wanted to achieve. I also began building a network of contacts in the sports world—connecting with college coaches, former athletes, and professionals who could offer their expertise and support.
TruChampions evolved from a simple idea into a fully realized concept—one that combined my personal experiences, my passion for sports, and my desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of young athletes and their families.
By 2016, TruChampions was officially launched as a national recruiting service, dedicated to helping athletes not only reach their dreams but also relieve their families from the financial burden of college tuition. Through partnerships with well-known athletes and professionals, and with the support of passionate individuals like Jimmy King and Melissa Sampey, TruChampions has grown into a trusted resource for athletes across the country.
